Biopsy from oral cavity

What is it?

Biopsy is a procedure where a sample of a tissue is obtained and sent for histopathological examination.

What is the aim of the procedure?

The examination of the tissue sample helps in better understanding the underlying disease process which will assist doctor in better management of the patient.

What is done during the procedure?

During the procedure either the whole lesion or a part of if removed and sent for histopathological examination. Based on the size and site of the lesion, it can be performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia.

What are the risks associated with the procedure?

  • Bleeding from the biopsy site.

  • Infection of the biopsy site.

Post-operative care and follow-up:

Oral feeds can be started on the same day as the procedure. Proper oral hygiene is to be maintained with regular mouth gargles. Discharge will be planned based on your general condition.
