Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises

The aim of the procedure is to make yourself get accustomed to the giddiness so that its effect on your daily activities is reduced.

Precautions and positioning:

Make sure that you are in a safe place where you cannot accidentally fall and injure yourself. If required please have someone be with you when performing the exercises.

Performing the procedure:

Perform each of the following sets 5 times per sitting. Perform 3 sittings per day.

Eye movements:

  • Looking up and then down.

  • Looking alternatively left and right.

  • Focus on a finger moving towards and away from face.

Head movements (at first slow, then quick, later with eyes closed)

  • Bending alternatively forward and backward.

  • Turning alternatively left and then right.

Exercises in sitting position:

  • Shrugging and rotating shoulders.

  • Turning head and trunk alternatively to the left and right.

  • Bending forwards and picking up objects.

Exercises in standing position:

  • Changing from sitting to standing, initially with eyes open and then with eyes shut.

  • Throwing a small ball form one hand to the other above eye level and following it with the eyes.

  • Throwing a small ball from one hand to the other below the knee.

  • Changing from sitting to standing and turning around in between.

Exercises while moving:

  • Circle around a center person who will throw a large ball and to whom it will return.

  • Walking up and down steps with eyes open and then closed.

  • Walking around the room with eyes open and then closed.

  • Playing any game involving bending, stretching and aiming with a ball.
