FESS : Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

What is it?

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is a surgical procedure done in case of recurrent sinusitis, polyps in nose and paranasal sinuses and other sinus related diseases that does not respond to medical treatment. 


What is the aim of the procedure?

The main purpose of the procedure is to remove the disease and improve drainage and ventilation of the affected sinus and for creating a proper pathway for using medications.


What is done during the procedure?

The procedure involves use of an endoscope which is introduced into nasal cavity without any external incision. The procedure is done under the assistance of cold steel instruments or microdebrider. During the procedure the sinus pathways are cleared, sinuses are opened and the diseased mucosa is removed.

The procedure will be carried out under general anaesthesia. If you have any anaesthetic concerns, please discuss with your anaesthesia.


What are the risks associated with the procedure?

  • Bleeding from the nasal cavity.

  • Infection of the operated site.

  • Dryness of nose.

  • Impairment of smell.

  • Damage to the orbit leading to visual disturbances.

  • Damage to the tear duct.

  • Cerebrospinal fluid leak.

  • Meningitis.


Post-operative care and follow-up:

Nasal pack will be placed for 1 – 2 days. It is necessary to use nasal spray and regularly perform nasal toileting/wash to prevent crust formation.


You will be discharged on the day following the surgery. You may have to be on follow-up with your doctor for a period of 1 month to 1 year. During each visit nasal endoscopy may be performed to assess your response. Based on your response, you will be prescribed medications during each visit.

It is usually done under general anaesthesia

How much time should I take off work?

If your work is a system based job then it can be resumed 3-4 days post the procedure. If your job compels you to visit dusty environment then it is better to take rest for 10 days before resuming your job

When can I wash my hair/take bath after the procedure?

Yes you can wash your head and take bath after pack removal

What can I eat after the procedure?

No special diet is needed, but it's best to avoid cold stuff like iced drinks and ice cream to prevent catching a cold, which might slow down healing.

Can I exercise or hit the gym after surgery?

Avoid heavy lifting and straining for about 3 weeks, but light walking is okay.

Can I travel by bike/taxi or go on long trips after the procedure?

It's best to hold off for a week. After that, follow your doctor's advice.

What are the dont's post procedure

You shouldnt blow or sniff in because it may cause bleeding from the nose
